Julius Hobson

Julius W. Hobson (1922–1977) was a pioneering civil rights leader, educator, economist, and one of the founding figures of the DC Statehood Party, the predecessor to today's DC Statehood Green Party. A fearless advocate for racial equality, educational opportunity, and democratic self-government, Hobson dedicated his life to challenging injustice and expanding civil rights for the people of Washington, D.C.
His 1971 congressional campaign helped establish the Statehood Party as a major political force, and he later became one of the first elected member of the Council of the District of Columbia following Home Rule. Throughout his career, Hobson championed equal educational opportunities, opposed discriminatory practices, and fought tirelessly for full voting rights and self-determination for District residents. His vision of a more democratic, equitable, and representative Washington continues to inspire the Party's mission today.
